I have a tendency to want to call the tune, so set lists often dictate my direction. Gotta love though sandwiches/weaves. I'd like to understand how shows flow and energy builds and abates, but I'm still tasting haphazardly from different eras.

I've followed The Other One to the ends of the earth, or to the beginning just to find out how good Viola Lee Blues was in '67.

But skipping around too much does take attention away from learning a period better. My collection is strewn about and I still don't understand really how the music changed from 72-74 and why the band took the break. It just seems like 76' on lost something.

I only came on in the 80s, pre-Dark Eyes, after Jerry was getting pretty strung out and while I like the Brent era, the ending of the enterprise is still a bit unsettling.

So, your question is mine I guess.

Hey GR--welcome aboard (I assume?)...did I gather rightly that you have only been listening a few months? Or did you just mean for that particular group of DEAD disks?

Always great to find someone that just got on the Bus!

Tell,

Actually I am new to this site and this treasuretrove of Grateful Dead Musc...Like a kid in a candy store. I bought the first Gratful Dead record when it was released when I was 13..My favorite is still Live /Dead for the music and the memories of my activities when it came out. After discovering this site I see ive missed a few things in the interveneing years..Anyway..Here now great music and great people..Thanks for all your contributions I enjoy them. Pleasure to meet you.

Thanks for clarifying. Makes me feel like a pompous ass (somebody here once called me a sanctimonious clown, appropriately).

Anyway, fall of '73, maybe?

:-)

.as i life in the former czechoslovakia i never had a big choice than to listen to all the Albums i could get and be happy that i had them.no misunderstanding please,i love the albums but after i managed to get my 1st tapes in the early 80s another world opened up.and than i manged to get internet last year(yes, yes, this is possible)and now i am exactly the kid in the candy store.i can listen to whole show runs, compare songs by the year there were played etc.it is just plain heaven....and my heavily built up collection is in the closet, and i return only when archives are offline.i know that my good ole CDs wont run away, but certain stuff on archives can disappear.so i listen to the most i can as long as i can.Yeah, the 73 recommendation could mean tradin a vice for another.but what a glorious one and than you will discover jewel after jewel....HAPPY TRAILS

i just filled a 300 disc cd book with all dead shows. i'm just going through the thing one show at a time. right now i'm on 8/10/82. pretty good show so far. my goal is to listen to every show i've downloaded at least once. i've downloaded about a thousand shows, give or take. i'll be busy for the next several years.
